정기정 박사는 매우 다양한 경험을 한 연구원이다. 프랑스국립공과대학에서 공학박사학위를 받고 1986년 한국원자력연구원에 입소하여 방사성폐기물처리 연구를 하던 중, 안면도 사태를 겪게 된다. 이후 방사성폐기물 처분장 확보를 위해 갖은 노력을 다 하다가, 1993년 프랑스 OECD/NEA 파견근무를 하게 된다. 1997년 귀국해서는 원자력시설해체, 사용후연료관리 연구과제 등을 수행하였고, 연구원으로서는 드물게 한국원자력연구원 기획부장을 맡아 연구원 경영에 참여하게 된다.

2006년 2월에는 국가핵융합연구소로 이적하여 세계 최대의 국제공동연구개발 과제인 ITER 사업의 한국사업단장을 맡고 있다. 출연(연) 연구원으로 일하는 것을 천직으로 알고 있는 그는, 국가가 베풀어 준 만큼 국가에 돌려주기 위해 최선을 다 하는 것이 그의 삶의 목표라 한다.

Jung, Ki Jung

Dr. Kijung Jung has had a diverse career.  Graduating from the French Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, he joined the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in 1986 and worked in the field of radioactive waste treatment during which time the controversy over Anmyeondo, an island off the Korean west coast and a candidate site for low-level radioactive waste disposal, took place.

 He would work on finding a site to host the low-level radioactive waste disposal facility until 1993 when he joined the OECD/NEA in Paris, France.  He returned to KAERI in 1997 and worked on decommissioning nuclear facilities and managing spent nuclear fuel.  Uncommon for someone with a technical background, he later took up the senior administrative position at KAERI of Director of the Division of Planning.

In February of 2006, Dr. Jung moved to the National Fusion Research Institute and started taking part in the ITER project, the largest international joint scientific research endeavor the world has ever seen, as the Director General of the Korean implementing body, ITER Korea.  With a self-proclaimed vocation in working for national research institutions, he states that his life goal is to do his utmost to give back to his country as much as he has received in return.
