홍진규 국가수리과학연구소 선임연구원

 

대기과학으로 박사학위를 받은 홍진규는 식물의 광합성과 생태학을 공부하는 약간은 수상한 대기과학도이다. 티베트 고원, 중국, 일본, 태국, 유럽 및 미국의 각지를 여행하며 생태계와 날씨, 기후 변화의 상관 관계를 밝히는 연구를 통하여 박사학위를 받았다. 현재는 수학과 물리학 그리고 기후변화과학을 접목하는 시도에 골똘히 빠져있다.

대학생 때 전자기파를 기술하는 맥스웰 방정식을 직관적으로 이해하려다 대학원에서 계속 공부할 결심을 하게 되었다. 대학생 때는 유명한 물리학자인 하이젠베르크의 ‘부분과 전체’라는 책에 깊은 감명을 받았으며, 현재는 역사와 심리학에 관한 책에 빠져있다. 움베르토 에코와 베르베르 베르나르의 소설을 좋아하고, 음악을 나누는 것은 인종을 나누는 것과 같다는 기타리스트 김태원의 말에 100% 공감하는 사람이다.

Hong Jin-kyu has an atmospheric science degree and he also studied photosynthesis and ecology. He is an unusual atmospheric scientist.

 

While at university, he was impressed by the famous physicist Heisenberg's 'Der Teil und das Ganze (Part and the whole)’ and he was fascinated with books about history and psychology. He also decided to study Maxwell's equations, which explains electromagnetic waves.

 

When travelling in Tibet, China, Japan, Thailand, Europe and America, he explored different ways to figure out the correlations between the ecosystem, weather and climate change for his doctorate degree.

 

He likes novels from Umberto Eco and Bernard Werber and agrees with the guitarist Kim, Tae-won who says “Sharing music is like sharing race.”

 

Today, he is addicted to mathematics, physics and climate change science
